The ItaliaSec: IT Security Summit is an annual gathering of IT Security leaders from across Italy. The event is an opportunity for them to come together in one space with the focus on how to best protect their organisations from cyber attack.
Ahead of the summit, we sat down with Pietro Felisi, Sales Engineer at Barracuda Networks, to hear his thoughts on the state of cyber security in Italy today, as well as getting some context around his presentation at ItaliaSec next week (4th – 5th April, Rome).

Let’s take a look at the IT security threat landscape in early 2023: what are we witnessing?
Attackers continue to target the expanding attack surfaces of digital organizations. Web and application attacks are widespread and vulnerable IoT systems remain top targets. Other features of the threat landscape in 2023 that we already witnessed in 2022 include vulnerable software supply chains, the abuse of multi-factor authentication by attackers, geopolitically motivated cyberattacks, the application of AI to cyberattacks – particularly email-based attacks, to bypass security detection and power more advanced social engineering – and the evolving ‘everything-as-a-service’ nature the cyberthreats such as ransomware.
Based on your answer, what would you identify as the 3 key priorities for IT Security leaders this year?
To combine an understanding of the evolving threat landscape with an integrated, defence-in-depth approach to security that covers all potential attack surfaces, including the cloud, and delivers powerful, SASE-based security that is easy to deploy, scale, manage and use in what is an increasingly complex IT environment.
What are your recommendations for making security an integral component of organizations’ trust and value proposition? Can you share a success story of one of your clients who have embarked on this journey?
Founded in 1947, the Grimaldi Group is a multinational integrated logistics group that specialises in the maritime transport of cars, rolling cargo, containers and passengers. The Grimaldi Group’s mission is to provide efficient, reliable, innovative and high quality services to transport goods and passengers by sea, while constantly identifying the needs and expectations of its customers.
Initially, Grimaldi had been looking for an Internet browsing system to replace the one it was using, which was complex and difficult to manage. “The As Giulio Capacchione, EDP Manager of the Grimaldi Group says:
“The main reasons that led us to choose Barracuda solutions were primarily the variety of the offer, which covers several areas and has allowed us to meet different needs, the speed of implementation, the simplicity of the interface, the excellent value for money and the fact that we can always count on prompt and high quality support”. “We should also add that, by adopting the Barracuda solutions, we have achieved significant cost savings on the purchase and management of appliances”.
What are you going to be addressing in your talk at ItaliaSec this year?
We’ll be discussing how to Accelerate and Secure your Cloud Migration with SASE Solutions on 4th April at 15:00 (Track A). Traditional concepts of network and security become obsolete when companies decide to adopt the cloud for digital transformation. If most data, applications and servers are hosted in a public cloud or as a SaaS solution, it becomes obvious to move from traditional data centres to the cloud. All is protected and managed by a cloud service. This explains the concept of Secure Access Service Edge (SASE). The next logical step is to move everything (routing, networking and security) to the cloud itself. And all this without forgetting to provide secure access for remote users, wherever they are and with any device they use (Zero Trust Network Access).
What can people expect from ItaliaSec?
To learn more about the how the threat landscape is evolving and the latest innovations in security solutions and technologies that will help to protect them, their digital operations, employees and customers against existing and emerging threats.
